Referrals / Pathway

Patients referred to us will receive a welcome pack with the relevant information.

They will be invited for an initial consultation when Dr. Nikolov will make a comprehensive assessment, take the relevant radiographs and spend time communicating their problem and its solutions with the patient.

Dr. Nikolov will then issue a full report with the diagnosis and treatment plan, including the number of treatment sessions and costs. (see enclosed report as an example).

The report will be sent to both the patient and the referring practice.

Should the patient accept the treatment plan, we will endeavour to book and treat the patient.

Whilst the patient is being treated at our Clinic, they can still attend to their regular examinations at their registered practice.

In the rare event we cannot treat the patient, we will communicate with both the patient and the referring clinician and we will be happy to forward the patient to Dr. Imogen Bury, if everyone agrees.

Once the treatment has been completed by us, the patient will be returned to your care with a discharge letter and advice.

We cannot accept registering any patient referred to us. We only treat their periodontal condition.

Who can be referred/seen?

Any patient with an unstable periodontal or peri-implant health condition, i.e., BPE scores 3 or above and a fairly controlled oral hygiene, or patients requiring different treatment modalities like crown lengthening, treating deep subgingival lesions.

How to refer

Please download and fill in a Perio Referral Form and post it to our address.

If you do not yet have our Perio Pack with the relevant information and referral forms, please call us, and we will deliver one to you.

For Patients

What is a dentist with a special interest in Periodontology and what is more about your dentist, Dr. Chavdar Nikolov.

A dentist with a special interest in Periodontology is a general dental practitioner who has gained additional experience, training and qualifications in Periodontology. They have a focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and dental implants. They are capable of performing a variety of procedures related to your gum health, utilizing a non-surgical and surgical approach.

Our clinician, Dr. Nikolov, has built 19 years of experience in general dentistry (completing many Diplomas and Certificates in many areas, such as Restorative, Implantology and Periodontology) and devoted the last five years to Periodontics. Since completing his 3-year MSc training at the University of Plymouth, he has delivered bespoke treatments for the patients of several private dental practices.

Treating and Supporting Clinicians

Dr. Chavdar Nikolov is our Periodontal clinician and we are in close contact with Specialist Periodontist Dr. Imogen Bury.

Also, part of our team is Dr. Johanna Hudson, who is undertaking an MSc in Periodontics.

What shall I expect at my periodontal consultation?

An initial consultation will be booked for 60 minutes.

Dr. Nikolov will start by taking a detailed history to understand your concerns and identify any contributing factors. A comprehensive periodontal (gum health) charting and further investigation, including X-rays as needed, will be performed. Dr. Nikolov will explain your clinical and radiological findings and a treatment plan according to your individual needs will be created. The consultation will be followed up with a report to you and your dentist, outlining the diagnosis, suggested plan and treatment fees. We will keep you and your dentist up-to-date on the progress of your treatment throughout.

Costs

Please see the Price List here for a full understanding of the costs.

We have Finance options if you need to spread the cost of your treatment.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gums.

Periodontitis (Gum disease) is the 6th most prevalent disease throughout the world and is significantly linked to general well-being and longevity. It is often ‘silent’ and can be present for decades without diagnosis and treatment. Left un-checked and it can lead to tooth loss and contribute to other diseases, such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.

If you are serious about it and would like to learn more, please take some time to explore the information provided below.

There is extensive information about gum disease on the Web, but for your ease, we narrowed it down to a few links and videos from the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, as seen below:

For Dentists

What do we offer?

We offer therapies for several aspects of periodontal health, such as:

  • Treatment planning and second opinion

  • Non-surgical treatment of chronic and aggressive periodontitis

  • Surgical management of periodontitis

  • Periodontal regeneration (where appropriate)

  • Periodontal microsurgery (minimally invasive periodontal surgery)

  • Crown lengthening to aid restorative procedures or for cosmetic reasons

  • Hygienist services for ongoing maintenance

  • Treatment of Peri-implantitis

Very efficient and friendly service from all the team at Honeycomb. Denplan provides good cover for hygienist and dentist care. I have had good guidance on crowns, a bridge and replacing amalgam fillings. My dentition is now the best it has been for years.
